Consider this: From my vantage point on the shoreline,
it appeared that the ship in the distance was floating aimlessly, driven by the
waves. Yet, the ship was firmly anchored and was never in danger of drifting.
We too need to be firmly anchored in God’s Word to keep us from drifting
aimlessly in life. Absolute truth is vitally important for all time and all people.
When we live our lives based on the truth of God’s Word, it acts as a guidance
system for the choices and decisions we make. Saint John of the Cross, Spanish
poet and Carmelite monk, put it this way, “When you see your appetites
darkened, your inclinations dry and constrained, your faculties incapacitated
for any interior exercise, do not be afflicted; think of this as a grace... God
takes you by the hand and guides you in darkness, as though you were blind, along
a way and to a place you know not. You would never have succeeded in reaching
this place no matter how good your eyes and your feet.”
Discuss: What problem are you and your spouse facing right
now? Name it. Talk it over together. Confess any doubt or anxiety to God.
Pause here and thank God that He is always with us. Even in
dark days, He is there. He only allows trials for our greater good. Praise Him
for His marvelous grace, even in the midst of your circumstances.
When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you
don’t throw away your ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the
engineer.
