Consider this: Our present culture has been appropriately termed a “rat race.” People scurry about like rats in a maze—dazzled, overwhelmed, and confused about how to escape it. Because the image of God in humanity was tarnished by sin, the reflection of our Maker is blurry. So, then, is our way. Although deliverance from the bondage of sin is a one-time act, living a transformed life is a process, called sanctification. God's transforming work moves beyond superficial things, such as trying to maintain a flawless facade, a perfect record, or even a life without scars. He wants to restore that shiny finish He gave us when He created us. When temptation threatens to overcome us, we must trust God by looking for the way out that He has provided. When we look to God, His Holy Spirit enables us to see things from His perspective, not just our own. Obedience to God is not necessarily painless. In marriage, especially, we can suffer injuries that leave scars, even when we make godly choices. The hard reality is: we can’t escape trials and temptations. The good news is that in every situation God provides a way out. Discuss: How can God help you avoid harmful temptations that can have a negative impact on your relationship? Pause here and remember the power of God that raised Jesus from the dead did not remove the scars left by the nails of Calvary. The resurrected Christ willingly chose to keep the scars of the cross. By His grace, we are called to come as we are—scars and all.
